CHAPTER 17
âMy father learned about it from his barber.â continued Sannity, âSo I deduced that he had to be the only one that my mother hadn't told. Not even my father stood up for me, and never asked me the details. My sister underestimated the situation, telling me it was all my fault. Clody had been our friend for a long time and my parents would never break ties with him, for any reason. That's the kind of mephitic position we were in. From that moment on, I tried to avoid any dangerous situation, that is, being alone with that swine. Nevertheless he never missed the chance to put his hands on me and whenever he looked at me his blatant sexual innuendo was unmistakable. He wasn't able to rape me again, despite being fully entitled to do it by my family, yet his presence scared and irritated me.â
âAnd Victor?â asked Marcellas.
âVictor and I broke up.â Sannity replied, âOr rather, we met just a few times after the incident. I told him everything tearfully. I begged him not to get any bizarre ideas and to let me take care of it. However his heart was crying out for revenge, since I just couldn't get myself to have any sexual intercourse with him. Even his kisses bothered me. For this reason, he grew apart from me. He reassured me by saying he'd always be there for me, in case I needed him. The following years were pure agony. I couldn't get close to a man without the memory of that morning getting in my way. Clody continued to harass me, well aware that, for him, there wouldn't be any consequence. One day, when I was twenty-two or twenty-three, I read something interesting in the newspaper: Doctor Zivariello (senior) would be holding a lectio magistralis at the university about the various weight sizes of the human soul. I knew his work, but the mere idea of having him in front of me in a lecture room quite excited me. So, on the day of the lectio, I went to the university to attend the event. I can still remember that when I arrived it was extremely difficult to get a seat. The auditorium was crowded and there weren't seats for everyone. With a bewildered gaze, I scanned the auditorium, in search of someplace to sit when suddenly I found myself being pushed towards the stairs leading to the upper rows. Sorry, said the guy behind me, but there are so many people pushing upwards. We'd better go up, not to end up getting trampled. That's how I met Ziva, without even knowing who he was. From that day on we started hanging out, but he didn't mention the fact of being Doctor Zivariello's son. One evening he invited me to have dinner at his place. I accepted, assuming that the whole family would be there. When he came for me, he confessed we'd be alone and, if I preferred, I could change my mind and tell him to go to hell.
